Karts-
Karts are evolving as specifically designed to suit dirt track racing.
Quality Australian manufacturers who produce dirt-racing karts
predominantly build the chassis.
It is possible to convert a bitumen kart to race on dirt by increasing
steering lock, fitting of dirt wheels and tyres and fitting of a dirt
air cleaner. Current chassis today generally use 40mm alloy axles with
mechanical or hydraulic brake assemblies. One-piece wheels both front
and rear are used in combination with tubeless racing tyres. Karts
have wheelbases from 101cm to 106cm depending on application required
with even shorter karts available for younger competitors.
The karts are all chain driven, use two stroke oil with premium
unleaded petrol fuel.
Karts have different coloured number plates to distinguish individual
class requirements.
The air cooled Yamaha brand of engine is the most popular as it fits
into Senior and Junior classes being fixed drive, these karts have to
be lifted and pushed to get started, spin out and they will stall.
The 125 Classes using Rotax or Parilla Leopard engines are water
cooled with clutches and battery powered push button start mechanisms.
Karts have to be mechanically sound, clean and in good working order
to pass scrutineering prior to the commencement of the race meeting.
Differences between the classes are type of engine's), combined kart
and driver weight / age.
